Essential Oils To Relieve Trauma

Recently, I experienced what I would have to say is one of the biggest traumas in my life. Everyone seems to be talking about PTSD, C-PTSD, etc. It used to be this term applied to those who served in the military and experienced the atrocities while in service. Today, most people have experienced trauma to one degree or another. We live in a world where there are experiences that create within us these traumas – experiencing any type of abuse can create trauma within us. Fortunately, therapists are trained to help us deal with these traumas and be able to function in our daily lives. We also need to support ourselves on a daily basis with these traumatic experiences. Essential oils are a fabulous way to do just that.

Many people would like to not have to rely on prescription medications. Sometimes, we do need medicine in order to save our lives – either physically, like when we need antibiotics to combat an infection that otherwise would have killed us, or emotionally, when we have really reached the end of our rope – literally and figuratively.

Essential oils are potent, complex chemical cocktails. I don’t necessarily, like to use that term, but they are quite amazing. The plants from which they are distilled produce these chemicals, and when these plants are distilled, these chemicals are therefore, in the essential oil. These chemicals have a direct affect on our brain and our emotions. This is how they can support us through any emotional issue that we experience.

One essential oil that helps us deal with trauma is Melissa officinalis, also known as Lemon Balm or by the common name of the essential oil, Melissa. Melissa officinalisis a leafy green plant that has a lovely lemony aroma. The herb has been used to make a tea which is known to help with insomnia and a host of digestive issues.

The essential oil has been used to treat Alzheimer’s disease and for a variety of psychological conditions. I worked with a psychiatrist who used the inhalation of Melissa essential oil when a patient would have an anxiety attack and for those with schizophrenia.

I have created a blend to help deal with grief and the pain of any type of loss which includes Melissa officinalis. This blend has helped me, personally, to recover from some of the losses which I have experienced. I named this blend “Owl” as the owl in my spiritual training is the symbol of death and rebirth. Every ending is truly a new beginning. This blend helps us to release the stuck energy that does not allow us to move forward. We all experience these times when we feel “stuck”, but don’t know if we can move forward. Yet, we wake each day to a new beginning.

I like to use this blend in a diffuser at night so that as I sleep, I breathe in the intention of starting a new day with hope and a little less “stuckness” or resistance. It helps me feel like I have the strength and courage to face a new day and begin again.
